Why Martin Luther College (MLC)

General overview of situation in Bangladesh

General overview of situation in Bangladesh As a newly independent (1971) country Bangladesh is struggling with huge population, low per capita income, mass poverty, unemployment, illiteracy, child labor, school dropout, malnutrition, discrimination and related social problems. The economy of the country is poor and based on the rural agricultural sector but natural disasters - mainly floods, affect the economy annually which delays economic progress. Rural-urban disparity in terms of per capita income, consumption, education, health facilities, and physical infrastructure is an important developmental issue in Bangladesh. Education is the key role for the overall development of Bangladesh. The government has so far achieved the goal of compulsory primary education for all children but the success stops there when the children cross the primary education level (5th grade). Maximum students do not have access to secondary and higher secondary education. On the other hand there are lack of good schools and colleges where the students can accelerate their academic and inner talents.

Background of MLC

In the year of 2010 Martin Luther College (MLC) was launched with the aim of providing Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) / intermediate level of education in Dhaka emphasizing on creating opportunities for the Christian and ethnic minorities from disadvantaged areas and communities in Bangladesh.

Need for education

Being experienced through SMNB, people realized that the ethnic and Christian minority students are in need of quality and higher education to uplift their livelihood and eager to continue study and even to higher study. Some of the reasons for this are:
a. In the villages there is not enough access for HSC study with good qualities.
b. Many students from rural areas have dream to come to Dhaka for higher education in future but do not have access or affordability to study in Dhaka.
c. Most of the Christian and tribal minority people are under average in economic condition.
d. Without having good score in HSC none can get chance to the public universities for Bachelor and Master’s degree where the fees are within reach. It is impossible for a middle class family to bear all the expenses of the private universities. It’s a vital reason for drop out in between HSC and university education here in this country.
e. Dhaka is the centre in location from different parts of Bangladesh.

Rational for emphasizing on HSC level study

a. Grade 11-12/HSC is the requirement to get admitted for higher education or study in the university here in Bangladesh.
b. Minimum HSC is needed to be enrolled in any skill or vocational training course or even to get a support level job in any organization.
c. 60% students need to work and earn money for survival of the family, and to get any kind of low profile job they need minimum HSC.
d. Commonly after passing HSC students can go for Nursing training, Primary Teachers’ Training, or any vocational or skill training course who are in need of earning for survival.
e. There are some Christian colleges in Dhaka like Notre Dame, Holy Cross, St. Joseph’s etc. At present those colleges are taking all the high scorers and have limited seats. So many of our Christian students are not getting chance in those colleges. Also as minorities, they are far behind in getting access to some other good colleges.
